Just wanting to get a feel on condition of corn stored around. I have been hauling some of our corn out since Jan. and condition seems ok, some I just want out cause we put it in straight out of field iit came out at 17.5-18.5 moisture, vom test was <1 on average, but have headr stories and seen trucks leaving because of rejected corn. Other bins that went thru dryer 14.5 and vom also low, those we'll keep a while hope for a rally or price to go down.(I don't want to make too much money)
I don't have a personal experience to share, but called an elevator in Wells County last week for a Hoosier Farmer story, and the first question I was asked by the gentleman on the phone was "Do you want to talk about vomitoxin?" I hadn't mentioned anything remotely resembling vomitoxin (I was asking about wheat), but clearly it's an issue up there.
Dan, we have been hauling to Poet in Alex, our vom tests have also been below 1. We dried the corn to 15 and it has maintained in the bins and is coming out in great shape. I have noticed a lot of guys being rejected and the corn just looks bad as you're next to them in line. I too wonder what caused this problem, is it worse in some brands of seed corn than others, it hasn't been a problem with any of ours. What are some cases where the vom tests are bad, was it present out of the field?
George you hear all kinds of things. "coffee shop" talk around here says Dekalb worse. Don't know? Also that this will be a problem for next 2-3 yrs. Fungus in fodder so in no till it will stay in soil for corn in2011 in that field even in rotation. Like I said just things I've heard. Also heard that its in fines if corn is run thru a screen can cut vom in 1/2. How is line at Alex when we were there in Jan sat for anywhere from 2-4 hrs hauling to Poet in portland sitting 1hr plus paying more. Have 5000 contracted to haul this month to Alex.
Blackford/Delaware/Jay I know have had issues with it. We deal with Poet in Portland and they've rejected a fair amount there also. I've heard the Dekalb stories also. We plant Pioneer and the driest we harvested in this wonderful year was 20%, dried to 15% at the house. A month ago my dad had a sample tested and it was .5, so hopefully it stays that way.
My father-in-law is in Southern Shelby County, and they're having the same issues there, as well in Decator, Randolph, and Wayne(more in-laws).
